researching a method for receiving sms banking authentication codes as am currently in Asia and have no working US phone number and cannot use debit card for on line purchases nor access my online account.

Many banks will send the code via email. If not, you might have to contact each bank's support line to obtain alternate means.

My daughter got caught up in just this situation recently in Europe (travelling from the US). She'd declined to spend a fortune on Verizon's expensive Travel Pass plan and was instead using a local eSIM -- which was great for data but obviously gave her no access to her US phone number and the SMS codes her bank was trying to send. In the end I had to Venmo her some money because of that holdup.

I think the expensive (but easy) answer is to go through your carrier and set up roaming so your SMS go through ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I do have a google voice number. When it gets a text, I'm also sent an email. I can read the text in a web browser.
