I went on a bike ride last night and forgot to turn on the outdoor cycle exercise on my S4

It didn't start automatically, should this work ?

It should. Just make sure the 'start workout reminder' is enabled in Watch app on phone in the workout App settings. My Series 2 is consistent with reminding me to end workout if I forget, but I haven't yet forgotten to start one to see if it detects it.

Argh so it still doesn't start automatically you get a reminder but doesn't just start ?

Also on the exercise app on the iPhone its showing as no data available for heart rate, but in the health app its showing data

The heart rate was enabled during the work out

Check the watch app under workout for auto detect. It’s shiws which workouts can be auto-detected. It’s exercuses like walk, run, swim as they involve arm movement.

I was too slow and someone showed the exact evidence. :)

It will tap you and ask you if you’re exercising and give you the option to start it. When you do start it you don’t lose any activity from before starting the workout.

That happens when it didn’t collect enough heart data to give you a reading.

How does it know when you started? Is it psychic? I have been out walking and it has taken nearly 30 minutes to tap.

If you don’t walk at a pace of 18min/mile or faster it won’t detect it as an exercise. This is what they claim as a brisk walk. Anything over that you’re not really pushing yourself. That’s also the pace you need to close your exercise ring if you’re not exercising. Start a walk workout and make sure you have the avg pace metric on and see what your avg pace is at the normal speed you walk. If it’s over 18mins it’s not considered a workout.

Just noticed this today. It prompted me and although I was just on my lunch walk, I started a walk workout. Was surprised when it started at 10 minutes in, so it was tracking before the notification which is good (I suppose it does that anyway for the rings).

Doesn't show that first 10 minutes on the map in the activities app though - I suppose thats fair enough otherwise it'd need GPS tracking on all the time which would probably kill the battery.

I have a series 0 and do not see an option for start workout reminder. Is it not supported with this model?

Also I’m getting the series 4 today. Will the option magically pop up when I pair my phone with the new watch?

its hidden in the options. I think its on by default. So if you go for a brisk walk or run it'll just ping your wrist after a few minutes and go 'hey are you going for a brisk walk? Want to start a workout?'

You have to be on watch OS5 and that isn't available for Series 0.

Wore mine to CrossFit this morning. Was a pretty heavy session involving running, dead lifts, cleans etc (so lot of arm movement) and didn’t remind me to start workout once.

Seems to ignore cycling. Got bagged this morning that my exercise was lower than usual. I used to walk 40 mins in to work but now cycle 15 mins instead. Seems to ignore that as activity

Exactly this doesn’t work for me either

Look at my post. #11

Walking back from buying lunch for my mom and after 5 minutes it prompted me.

Also prompted me the other day when I was running at the treadmill and suddenly nature called so I have to stop and go to toilet lol. So it’s working on both start the exercise and stop.
