Is there any way to auto save an iMessage thread as messages come in so they can be archived? I'm finding that the sender can delete a message on their end and then it disappears from my copy of the thread. Maybe somehow block the ability for a sender to delete messages already sent?

So you mean senders delete the message they sent on their phone and the messages also disappear from your device? Wow first heard about it. Maybe you are right I just didn't pay much atten on this. Yes you can get a copy of messaging history by backing up your phone. If you saw any messages disappeared for whatever reason, yo can restore from backups. I know this is a dumb situation but for now I can't really figure out another ways

This is very interesting to me as well. I've had contacts delete messages from our conversations via iMessage, but when compared side to side, the entire conversation was still intact on my phone. Is this a new "feature"?

no, it's a separate apple id. I've done some initial tests sending an iMessage from my iPhone and then deleting it on my iPhone and it doesn't seem to delete from the thread when accessing iMessage on my mac. But with at least one other party, they seem to have been able to delete iMessages on their end and those have disappeared from the thread when viewed on my mac. I wonder why?

Mavericks.

A somewhat related question...can the Messages app display SMS messages sent/received from an iPhone in addition to iMessages?

The app is just Messages. I send/receive iMessages and SMS all the time. The only difference is that iMessages are blue bubbles and SMS are green. Was there another difference that you had in mind?
