MacOsX has a great feature to type in words for me, like my address etc. It´s in Prefs->Keyboard->Text. There I can make a new abbreviation "RMW", and then add "Read My Word". Every time I then write RMW my Mac writes "Read My Word". That´s cool, right? But it does not work every time, only every second or third time.
I have to make a new ShortCut and fill in some words (I just use silly things like dafasfasfa and then: sdheowghfshv. When I hit Enter, everything works fine. Just until the next day, often (but not always) the same problem shows.

I spoke to the Apple hotline, and it drives them nuts too because they use these abbreviations a lot during their work.

But Apple just does nothing to solve this.

I had the same experience with built-in text expanding functionality and a third-party tool called Rocket Typist, just not so often as you're describing it.
This march, I bought another third-party tool called Typinator. It has much more features and until now I never regret the move. There are some times that expansion takes some more time in larger LibreOffice document, but it never failed so far. When I bought it, it was a special offer on bundlehunt.com. Maybe you´ll want to wait and see if there´ll be a Black Friday or some other deal in the future. However I think Typinator is worth every cent of the regular price and there is a trial to test it.

This problem has existed as long as Apple has offered the feature built-in to the system. It has never worked consistently (if at all).

I never wanted to spend the money on the more popular utilities that offer text expansion, but I used the more affordable aText ($5 one time fee via in-app purchase).

It does not offer the plethora of features of some of the other more popular apps, but it always worked perfectly for the basic features you want in a text-expanding app.

[Update] I see now that aText has changed their pricing to $5 per year, or a $30 lifetime license. Bummer! So at this point, Typinator is cheaper and has more features, so I would go with that.
