Hi guys,

I have a mid tier standard mini 2018 (i5/8gb/256) and want to install 3DS Max 2019 on it which unfortunately only runs on Windows.

Will I be better at doing a new partition on the SSD and install Windows there and have a dual boot or should I just use Boot Camp?

Wondering how much of a performance hit Boot Camp will give?

Anyone running 3DS on their mini 2018 here and how good does it run?

Thanks!

A "dual boot" and Bootcamp are kind of synonymous ... Bootcamp means running Windows off a dedicated partition, in what's effectively native mode, so ~full performance capacity of the underlying hardware. When you setup Bootcamp, you'll have a dual boot menu option so you can choose MacOS or Windows (via Bootcamp) by holding ALT during the startup.

Maybe you mean a VM, as in Virtual Machine? That's not a dual boot or Bootcamp, it's its own thing :) You'd need some virtualization software, Parallels, VMWare Fusion, etc., and no, a VM won't performance nearly as good as Bootcamp - the downside of the latter being having to dedicated a fixed amount of storage to Windows, not having access to MacOS (if that's your primary computing platform), and at this point, without a janky 3rd party option, no access to the MacOS drive from BC if you're using APFS (the reverse does work).

Ah, yes! I was missing up things!

Then yes, BT is definitely the way to go for best performance.

Thank you!

I am running AutoCAD 2019 Civil 3D on a 2018 Mini (i5, 256, 32) using Parallels 14. I currently have 8GB of RAM allocated to Parallels and it is running smoothly. I like not having to reboot my machine, hence my reason for using Parallels.
