Finally, dynamic blocks!

The most ridiculous thing about the pricing is that it has been the same price as the Windows version of AutoCAD, while lacking significant functionality this whole time. The feature-parity has been way off, and the price should have reflected that.

You actually don't need a .edu e-mail address. I am in high school and we use it. How does it mark the files? Also, I really wish AutoDesk Inventor would come to the mac! It is a pain on bootcamp, but incredible software.

I don't know how it does it programatically, but it is hardcoded into the file itself. AFAIK nobody has figured out how to remove it yet (though, I'm also not sure if anybody has tried).

How does somebody know that it is from an educational copy, and I can do anything with the files but sell them/a product from them, right?

It's a pretty big watermark that goes across the page. Or at least it used to be. The big problem is that the watermark is hard coded, so even if you send the file to someone with the commercial version, when they plot it, the watermark stays. Honestly, it was pretty dumb, in my opinion. If you used the student version, there would be a huge watermark across any portfolio drawings or assignments.

I do, however, seem to recall that you used to be able to save it as an older .dxf file and then save back as .dwg. Don't know if this is still possible.

And yet... DraftSight Free is nearly a plagiaristic clone of AutoCAD, and costs 0.0% of your income - regardless of your income. I've been using it on Mac for several years and it is intuitive enough for someone doing 2D drafting. I've looked but never could find any restrictions on commercial use.

Absolutely 100% agree with you. I'm not self-employed, though I occasionally do some side drafting, and most of that is done on DraftSight, simply because it's free. The main point I was trying to make was that seems expensive to regular people, but I think it's justified for professionals. Just like any professional tool.

I think of AutoCAD vs. DraftSight in similar terms to MS Office vs. iWork. Not exactly the same, but close enough for most people. If you start with the free/ cheap version and it's not enough, there's always a step up.

the bold/underlined statement above is not true. I contacted Autodesk this morning and you can only purchase a perpetual license for AutoCAD 2015 for Mac in any of the Mac versions.

Update: looks like the Autodesk rep was wrong! just looked at the website and you can now obtain a desktop subscription.

For some reason you have to do a search on their website to get to the page i attached

They should fire their marketing team and hire people that quit Apple to find new challenges.

Even when you end up finding this page, it doesn't tell you a lot about the product. I want a free 30-days trial, I want a students version with watermarks, I want screenshots, I want tutorials, I want videos of new features (such as the new lasso tool if they brought it to the Mac too), I want graphs that show the performance as opposed to the old versions, I want a chart that compares Draftsight and AutoCAD to prove me AutoCAD is still worth money.

Gosh, how bad can they be... !!!!
