Automater Explanation

Can someone explain to me what the Automater application on my MacBook Pro is? I am running Mac OS X 10.5.4

In short: You can use it to set up certain repetitive tasks to be done automatically by your Mac.

It allows you to save the steps for thing you do repetitively, such as processing photos, so you don't have to do each step individually, every time, you just save it as an app.
