Automatic Backup with every Sync

Is there anyway to stop iTunes backing up the whole phone every time I sync? I'm using a Gen 1 iPhone, and have just installed 2.0- I'm sure this didin't happen previously, and makes syncing a fairly long process!

Yeah it's doing this for me too. It seems like it's backing up everything and it's taking about 20-30 minutes.
