automatic disconnect when VPN disconnects?

I use a VPN and I configured it over the Mac OSX Snow Leopard Network preferences. Well, sometimes my VPN disconnects. This wouldn't be so bad, but when it disconnects, my downloads/browsing is continued with my real IP address, making my VPN redundant. Is there any option so that this stops?

That's the beauty of web browsers. They tend to be resilient to this.
