Automatic Sync Disabled

I'm trying to get my phone to automatically sync when I connect to my laptop since that's really the only reason I would link the two.

In iTunes, I found the option but it's greyed out. Does anybody know how I can activate this option?

See if iTunes Preferences > Devices: Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically is selected. If yes, de-select it.
