What are your thoughts on allowing your applications to automatically check for updates. I'm thinking this results in unwanted sluggishness as the application is constantly logging into the network in the background every time you open it (or once a day). Is it better to uncheck the auto update option and use a program like Application update? Thanks for your input.

it's really not very much of a resource hog at all. some will check weekly or monthly, some upon every launch. not more resource-heavy than loading a tiny web page one time.
