I'm asking this question because I don't have a Mac myself (yet ;) ) and I want to know what my daughter at college will be dealing with when Mac OSX 10.4.4 on her new latest rev PowerBook (her first Mac) prompts her for the latest 10.4.5 update (and all updates for that matter). She has the auto update setting set to the default setting--something like "Check for updates and then ask me what to do." My question is this, when she says its OK to download and install the update(s) will the OS also prompt her to quit all other applications before starting the installation?

robbieduncan is correct. However, the computer will want to restart when the installation is done. If your daughter has been working on something while her download and installation proceeded, she will have to save her data and stop while her computer reboots into the updated OS.
