Time Machine on my Mac has kept backups of my machine since December of last year. I have no need for that many backups, and they are taking up space on my external HD. Is there a way to have backups older than say, a month deleted automatically?

Time Machine is set up to be as simple as possible so it only deletes older backups when you run out of space. If you don't want it to take up as much space, partition the drive and give only part of it to Time Machine and then you can limit how much space Time Machine uses
