About how long (minutes) does it take for the watch to automatically detect an exercise? Mainly walking

I’d like to know as well. I started jogging and 4-5 minutes later.... nothing. My watch doesn’t detect anything, and the setting is on.

When I go for a run, if I forget it takes about 3 minutes. I dunno that it has ever detected a walk for me.

Mine detects an outdoor walk within about 5-7 minutes. At least you get credit for the whole period anyway.

Mine doesn’t detect the activity I’m doing, just the calories burned. Do I have to manually select “walk” each time?

No, it should remind you automatically as long as you have Settings > Workout > Start Workout Reminder enabled (and End Workout Reminder too if you want). I don't recall the exact reminder text, but you tap on it to say yes I'm doing a walking workout.

I wish it would decect cycling. I ahve to remember to start it every time. so I got a fitbit for that and it gets it with no input on my part at all.

Mine detects at exactly 10 minutes for an outdoor, or indoor, walk. I haven't tried it for a cycling or running exercise, tho.
I'm seeing other sources that say 10 minutes too. I'm going to pay more attention later today.

It doesn't *always* get it, tho, which is of course frustrating. I have noticed that if I'm starting my walk, and keeping a rather good pace (not just strolling and stopping to pee on every bush and road sign), then it's more reliable. But if my pace is slow, quick, slow, quick then the watch won't pick it up.

Good luck!

I was just out for a walk, and yep, the start workout reminder came on at exactly 10 minutes, and of course, credited the first 10.

i would worry more about the Police than your AW if you are stopping to pee at every bush and sign :)
