Does anyone know of any application that will automatically disable airport wireless card (ie. put it to sleep) when not actively using the network connection?

I am thinking of how you can turn your screen off after 5 minutes of non-use... I can think of some situations where you might want to leave airport off most of the time, and have it turn on automatically if you need to connect to some network resource... is that possible?

I don't know of an automatic way, but I use a simple Location to ensure that my AirPort is off on my PB when I'm running on battery in a area with no wifi signals. Takes about 5 seconds to switch..

Why don't you just enable "Show Airport Status in menu bar" and simply use that menu to turn it on and off as you so desire?
