You are a jerk

http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/maccar/

Just dont go there and ask these questions, use it for research.

Actually this is a very useful link to answer the original question. @Sdashiki is a jerk for his smarty pants remark, as are many of you. Get a life. Trolls.

That is excactly what I have in mind for my car. I want it to slip in and use the DIN/Double-DIN setup (i.e. there is no way one is going to use a suction cup with the iPad -- it's too big) that hopefully will be easy to click the iPad in and remove it easily.

Because it was too much work for Sdashiki to be a decent human being.

Here's what it looks like. The responses are very interesting as well, there are some interesting issues to consider. I put a stereo in a secondary car that has blue-tooth streaming for the iPhone. That would be terrific, though I'm not sure if the iPad will have bluetooth.

<hat-tip> to http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/members/disconomad.html (DiscoNomad) for asking what many are thinking about.

The numbers don't lie...

great.....just because fighter planes have computers does not mean cars should have dash mount computers.

fighter pilots are TRAINED....ricers are not.....

its against the law in canada in several places to even operate a device while driving...talking ....texting or email.

soon it will that way world wide.

Canada is also Socialist and has limits on Free Speech. Legislation is not the way to solve the Worlds problems. Why do so many people want the Government involved with every little detail of their daily lives?

Studies show that highway accidents and deaths are at an all time low, and at a time when there are more cars on the road than ever before. The problem is the pro Nanny state media and watchdog groups that obsess over every little accident as though it were National tragedy.

There have always been distractions in the car. From the first AM radios, to FM radios, and then CB radios. It's always been there, but despite popular belief we are actually handling it better than we ever have. The numbers don't lie...

Just don't mount it on top of the dash - can you imagine the blind-spot you could create with a 9.5" x 7.5" oblong sat up there?

I wouldn't recommend it anyway, but if you're going to do it, get it down low so that your view isn't obscured - it's bad enough on a motorcycle at the moment with some vehicles pillar blind spots, but add in that....

i know a lot about car audio and can chime in.

you will need an aftermarket deck. any usb ipod control deck will do just fine. sony has some, pioneer has some, alpine has some. then you will need to go to a car audio shop and ask for a custom fibreglass enclosure. they will have to custom mold it to fit your car.

a typical deck costs $200.
a custom fibreglass job costs $500-800.
you then just need 1 usb to ipad cable and 1 ipad.

You don't NEED an aftermarket deck. Just a deck that has some sort of way to get the audio in. I have a stock in dash navigation. I have my iPod in the glove box and I can control it with my steering wheel controls. The iPod interface I have right now doesn't support the iPad but there are others that do. Im looking to come up with some layover mount that looks stock to put the iPad over my in dash but is easily removable. Still working on it.

Also to all the "oh great more accidents" people do you really think your going to change anyones mind? So do you post in here just to make yourself feel better? How many times can you say the same thing before getting tired of it. You don't want an iPad in a car then don't put one in yours and leave the rest of us alone.

What if you just use bluetooth for audio? Will that sound bad?

Then use a cig lighter to charge...

ProClips

I've ordered the ProClips tilt-swivel holder for my iPad3G:
http://www.proclipusa.com/brodit-device-holder/apple-ipad/holder-with-tilt-swivel-511139-18173.aspx

I use the iSimple Gateway which does not support the iPad yet, but I am using the aux audio in vs the standard iPod connector I use for my iPhone. I think iSimple will update the device to work with the iPad eventually.

I've written on my current experience with the iPad 3G for nav use here:

MANY MANy cars have in-dash touch screen devices put ther eby the manufacturer

All one needs to do is look at the showroom floors and elsewhere (online) and they will find that touchscreen devices have been in cars fro quite a long time and many are replacement for the dials/knobs that were there before.

Stating that having an iPad in-dash is a safety hazard is probably valid - it is probably not crash tested.

Breathing is a distraction that some drivers can't handle. Ban it.

there are a ton of negative people taking out their frustrations on the ipad. All i'm saying is keep it on topic...

How can i mount it in a car?

not is it a good idea. haha

Thanks homieesss :)
Rian Flynn

Greets Rian,
No your not gonna get flamed by me, I am looking for the same, either a dashboard mount or a center hump mount. Essentially all I want is to be able to have the unit easily visible from the driver seat, with a GPS app and Cell service, it would be a beautiful compliment for this. That is what I am trying to achieve.

I do not know what part of the USA your in, but if you are close to
Los Angeles California, there is a company called West Coast Customs, they are an extreme mod company that will modify / customize anything on wheels. However they may be a bit pricey but their 2nd to none in the world.

Therefore I am trying to find a DYI type setup I can do myself. I was thinking on what Law Enforcement uses to hold their notebooks on their dashboards. Of course this does not need to be nearly as sophisticated as they are, because iPads are only a fraction of the weight compared to a Panasonic Tough Book, which is what the cops use.

Good luck in your quest, and if I find anything I will post it here.

Obviously i'm not going be playing games while I'm driving!

Actually it wasn't obvious and just because you say your not going to doesn't mean that your not going to. Given how you phrased your words I do not think safety was the first concern.

I've used my ipad 2 in my car for almost a year no issues, its just like a touchscreen head unit or gps that people have used for years, so I don't understand the outrage.

Anyway, I use a Proclip attached to a Kuda mount on the dash and it works great.

Since the new ipad is very similar in dimension, I'm hoping it will fit since I sold my ipad 2.

I just wish they had added Siri, it wouldve made it really much better/safer in the car, but maybe the voice dictation they did add will suffice.
