can one set mac os x to run a certain app when a device is connected?

for example, i have a canon g9, and i want it to run a canon software (to transfer pics).

I'm not sure if your camera would have different software than mine, but my old SD630's software launched automatically when I plugged in the camera. I don't remember now if it was a setting within the Canon software or not, but I just checked Image Capture, and it seems that you can set it to open the application of your choice when you plug in your camera.

Yeah, Image Capture is what you use (go to preferences) to setup which program opens when you plug in a camera. It is a rather buried feature.
