Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora

Pandora Overlook.jpeg

I waited for a sale and finally jumped on this ($28 till 20Jan, Steam. I went with the Deluxe Version- $32). So far so good. I'm a little excited. :)

Plot SPOILERS
The game starts out 8 years before the Battle of the Hallelujah Mountains the rebellion led by Jake Sully to eject humans from Pandora. You are one of a group of presumed Navi orphans who was captured by John Mercer (leader of the Resources Development Administration, being the Executive Vice President of Frontier Operations in the Western Frontier). You're mentored by Alma, an Avatar who goal is to assimilate you into the ways of humans and the commerce of Earth. She later saves you. Jump ahead 8 years to Jake Sully's Rebellion and the situation for humans is "We Are Leaving". But Mr Mercer wants to clean up before he goes. I'll leave that to your imagination. Now jump ahead 8 more years to just after Avatar 2 The Way of Water. You've been asleep literally, in a cryo chamber but now your re-awakened by Alma and Navi rescuers. Upfront, there's no romance in this game... :(

Opening Rescue.jpg

The bad news is the bad humans have returned. You escape the facility that you've spent most of your life in, that's now a ruin, to rediscover the wonders of Pandora.

There's not a lot of challenge escaping the facility you've been kept in. I mean that's fine with me, it's run, sneak, and avoid. I'm a know nothing escaped prisoner on my way to discovering my history. When you break out into the sunlight you'll probably be impressed. As far as extended game play, I have a ways to go.

Tech notes:
It's reported that an SSD HD is required to play this. Of note I first installed it on a HDD and loading times were horrendous. I promptly moved it to a SSD.

At the beginning of the game there is an adjustment to gamma, with 2 images. You are supposed to turn down the gamma until the bottom image is barely visible. This turned out to make the first part of this game, inside an unlit facility really dark. I started the game over, but this was not offered again by the game. I did some research, and discovered that my HDR was turned off. I turned it on. And a conversation on Reddit suggested adjusting the brightness and contrast setting located in the graphic settings config file be changed as follows:

Messing with HDR- Windows>System>Display>HDR- This was all turned off. Having a dark screen in Avatar Frontiers of Pandora, I turned on Use HDR, HDR Video Streaming, and Auto HDR.
https://culturedvultures.com/avatar-frontiers-of-pandora-enable-hdr/

Then I adjusted Brightness and Contrast settings in the graphic settings config file.
Location of Config File:
C:\Users\user name\Documents\MyGames\AFOP Folder- Open the file and under Video streaming: I changed the contrast2 from .5 to 1, and brightness2 the default value is 0 to -1. This made a difference for dark interior spaces, which I’ve not seen since escaping.

You may regard this post as me being whiny, or disillusioned with the game, but not so! The environment is very immersive and the dialog with NPCs is good, even if it’s not that interactive. 😃

Day 2- Facing a Sucky Save System
The game uses an auto save system that sucks. There is no way (I know of) to go back and replay a scenario, if I want to do better, try something different, or just experience it over again. There are save files, 4 save slots, I’ve not seen an option to “load” a game. So if I understand this correctly, you can make copies of them, but I have no idea how you can remember what they are other than add notes, and if you can’t choose to load what you want, then a save represents the most recent save among the 4X lots? Just guessing at this point. 🫤

This really does suck, because if you like saving incremental progress, in the middle of the game, I imagine you can hit your windows key, navigate to the save file location and make a copy of it, including a note about what it likely represents.

The Puzzling Jungle, path finding- Directly related to managing saves, although YES, if you die, you can repeat. :)
There is minimal game hand holding regarding finding your way to the current destination, especially when a sadistic game designer constructs not readily apparent paths to get there. The other end of the scale is Starfield that literally paints a line on the floor for you. :)

I had a simple task of meeting friends at the top of a cliff. When using Navi senses, you do get a bright light on the map and in your vision for the destination, but the jungle is puzzling by design. Just walking towards the light does not work, even taking detours based on how the terrain looks was a no go. After 30 minutes, I broke down and relied on a video to show me the way and was glad I did. :)

Last night I completed a quest to defend the Resistance Research Station, and I’d sincerely like to repeat this, not that I screwed it up, but that I had to run across several miles of uncharted jungle with a 6 minute time limit, and it involved at least one huge leap of faith. The first 2 times I tried it, on my own I died after the third jump. I did not try “the jump” in the video I’ll post, but other jumps. :)

If you’re weak like me: 🙃
Song Quest- Tricky to find your way up to the cliff. From the Pneumatic Tower Echo go NW look for pink flower and pink fungus stepping stones on side of a tree, about half way up reverse direction clockwise to other side of tree to find a way up back to high land, muddy path, low passage walking in water.

Find Nor Quest- Oh my God…

On Steam I’ve been laughing at the gamers who lament they can’t play humans who want to subjugate and trash Pandora. One guy actually said “the developers got it wrong”. I think they are trolls. 🙂

This game has sucked me in. It’s the first game I’ve ever played that I did not mind spending a lot of time exploring, looking for a crafting item, because the environment is incredible. Incredibly immersive and zen like. I feel like I’m there.

Climb every tree via lift vine, acid spores, eggs, and bark, all essential. I’ve been looking for canopy roots, a crafting component for bows, that is found up in the canopy of trees. Your Navi senses should make them glow from the ground, at least other craftable items do. Acid spores are common and required to make poison arrows. Besides the damage of the arrow, a cloud of poison engulfs the victim. Don’t use them when hunting for food.

As a Navi you are powerful, 10-13’ tall, 330 lbs. Combat is fun, and relatively easy. I’m on normal difficulty and am thinking about turning it up a notch. See the AMP section below. When multiple AMPS are present, stealth is a good tactic. Arrows frequently kill without setting off alarms.

Revelation: There are no melee weapons in this game. 🤔 Your fists are your melee weapons. Agressive Viper Wolves or Scarab Crawlers bother you? Beat them to death with your fists. Soldiers? One hit kills

The AMP, Amplified Mobility Platform, I feel like the scale has been altered in this game as compared to the movie, but maybe not. They feel smaller in game.

IMG_3442.jpeg

Besides the weak spots that a heavy bow arrow can one-shot kill them, I’ve closed the distance to them without them seeing me coming, and once you get next to them, they can be beaten to death with your fists. I’ve done it several times. And once you’re next to them, their gun is no longer a threat because you are either behind them or within their radius. Their arms are ineffective, so far. I have yet to be hit with a AMP arm. Clearly they have not attended Colonel Quaritch’s AMP knife fighting course. 😉

Here’s an image of Stephan Lang in front of the AMP from the movie. My Navi would be twice as tall as him. I can easily pummel the lower part of the cockpit area, with my fists until the machine dies.

IMG_3443.jpeg

You’ll also attain an “Eject” skill which to save some time, allows you to shoot their canopy, shattering it, then yanking the soldier out. Shoot with bow (or gun), shatter it, hit V (melee key) to pull them out, and rip their heads off. Oh, wait, I’m confusing this with Cyberpunk and flying heads. 😜 seriously, I’m still figuring out the execution of this. They’ve died before I had the chance to yank them out. ☺️

Ikran and Rider

Farther in now, the Pandora environment is a masterpiece, amazing, the first game where I don’t mind taking the time to harvest items from the environment.

Grind- Compared to a base building game like Conan Exiles or Ark Survival Evolved, this is no comparison, not grindy at all. But you may spend time trying to find stuff. Example, I wanted to upgrade my heavy bow and I needed a ‘canopy root’. They’re not that common. I spent several sessions while playing the game taking the time to look up in the trees for the item, couldn’t find it. It’s a large map with many biomes. So I broke down, found a post online, which told me exactly where to go, and there they were.😋

Ikran Rookery Destination.jpg

Rookery Desination

Ikan Rookery Climb 2.jpg

Up to the Rookery

Ikran Rookery Climb.jpg

One part of climb looking down. At the top, the ground is very far away.

Flying- I finally got my wings, having to climb up to the Ikran rookery. This vertical space amazed me. The experience of nabbing a Ikran as your own is not as difficult as in the movie. You don’t have to wrestle them, but one significant element of the game design is pathfinding puzzles, and climbing for this purpose is no exception, although the puzzles are not overly difficult, they are definietly not straight forward. The journey up is beautiful and impressive.

Many elements of the game including finding Tarsyu plants a connection to Eywa, that gives you skill points, and Bellsprig plants that give you permanent health buffs, you can see a dot on the map, but when you get there where is it? It’s either underground, or up on top of that cliff you're standing at the bottom of.

Env Waterfall.jpg

Regarding this, when you get your wings, vertical challenges become much easier, but realize you may loose your intimate connection to the surface. I’m finding that I use the Ikran for long distance, when fast travel is not available. Fast travel is available to every base and most facilities, like field labs that you visit. Most of the time, I try to stay grounded, but vertically, the Ikran is a huge convenience.

Combat
Obviously, you use your Ikran for aerial combat with Scorpions which I’m still a new comer at. It’s definetly not as dynamic as in the movie, the camera follows behind you, a key allows for a free camera to look around. A skill allows you to do barrel roles, but these are small maneuvers designed to avoid incoming fire, not large arcs that would change your angle of attack upon an enemy. I suppose, this is a limit of the game engine. I imagine pulling my Ikran up and over an enemy ship in a large arc, shooting down into the cockpit while upside down, but you can’t do that. Bullet time would make that feasible! 😄

Anyway, you can shoot them with arrows which are effective like sending 4’ inertial energy missiles at them, but the heavy automatic rifle, you’ll inevitably pick up finishes them off quickly.

Many bases have Anti-Air Turrets so aerial assault is not the best in this case. And I’m running into combat situations with many AMPs present, where stealth is better. Inside a base, if there are 3 AMPs in close proximity to each other it can be difficult because where one is easy to kill, others who will make it difficult. Out in the bush, it’s a lot easier to run around and avoid fire.

This is not a routine strategy, but in one case I found when I started shooting enemies at a base, I actually lured many of them away, circled around to the gas, drilling, environmental-rape facility, with the time to sabotage it, which results in an explosion and in the plant being abandoned. Pandora quickly retakes ownership. BTW, that’s one of your goals in the game is to reduce the pollution levels by destroying.

Gas Plant Reclaimed 2.jpg

Gas Plant destroyed and being reclaimed

I also have run into several circumstances where when combat is initiated say 15 dots pop up indicating enemies, then I kill three or four and suddenly all the rest have disappeared. I’m not sure what that’s all about. It might be a game design or glitch. I don’t see it as the enemy running away so it’s a puzzle for now.

Meeting Eywa with friends.jpg

Friends meeting Ewya

My character I don’t even have a name. Not given the opportunity to name myself, when others see me they just call me Sarentu which is the name of my tribe, apparently my dead clan. I’m not happy with my character’s appearance. Inevitably, I run into locals who are more attractive than myself, this is partially because they are animated and talking. The only glimpse I see of myself is with a glum look on my face, Sure, for a selfie, I can apply an emote, which is mostly designed for co-op, but I’m not happy with this element of the game.

Photo System- Ok so I can take selfies outside, but not inside. Why? I don’t know. I’m not really thrilled with the selfies I do take, so that’s one disappointment of the game. I noticed something similar in Starfield. So far the best photo system is in Cyberpunk 2077.

Avatar Character.jpg
Toying with best haircut. May switch to pulled back and braided.
Notice the blouse acquired in game. No real need to buy at the Ubisoft store

Regarding the Ubisoft Game store- When you buy the game, at least when I bought it, I spent an extra $7 for the deluxe version and got an included outfit for myself and my Ikran. That was reasonable, although I hate the blouse, it’s way too fancy, looks ceremonial. I think it’s labeled Sarentu traditional, or something like .They’ll try to lure you into buying more cosmetic items. In game you’ll be rewarded with gear clothing designs. $7 was reasonable, but other than that, I suggestso be patient and save your $10 or $25. You’re hardly going to see yourself anyway.

Romance? There is none. Disappointed, although the conversation you do have with NPCs are heartfelt, as they have distinct personalities.

After all the raving I did about this game, I have drifted from it. :( Not enough social engagement, repetitive action although I have withstood repetitive before if there was a social element. I feel like an outsider in this game with the other Na’ve. 😔

I acknowledge most games are repetitive. I love Fallout 4 to death, and in every building you enter, enemies pop out and you kill them. Yet, I have company, my AI companion, as meager as the relationship is, I don’t feel alone, and I even develop affection for these companions while knowing full well they are artificial, the voice acting, provided by a real person is good enough. I actually think that when they start producing AI voices, that these relationships will take a hit because the player knows there’s not a real human speaking, maybe…

And make no mistake, it’s better with a good AI companion because they’re native to the story, not a friend you brought along to Westworld to share your adventures.

And F4 has themes, you’re there looking for your child, there are multiple factions in competition with each other, some hate, or just tolerate each other. Because it’s a solo game can shape of fate of the Commonwealth. And I know that I mentally insert social constructs into the game, to make it feel more real, there is a psychology thing going on here which keeps me engaged because there’s enough to build on. 🤔

In Avatar Resistance most of the time you’re taking down facilities that the bad humans have placed all over the western frontier, high polluting bringers of death that turn the landscape brown. Oh, I’ve taken down probably 20 facilities, I’m doing it by myself, I usually sneak in through a grate that I knocked out, sneak around and pick off enemies, which in most cases I can avoid setting off alarms for a while. But I’ve been doing this for more than a month, and that seems to be the routine, eradicate destroy, which sees immediate results cleaning up the environment. It’s a gorgeous, immersive landscape, once I sat in front of my monitor eating dinner just observing the game from a safe location within the game, watching and listening to the environment, with all sorts the animals walking, flying by, it’s that good, relaxing, and meditative. You help the different Navy tribes with various tasks, yet I feel like an outsider. The story itself, feels empty to me, very rinse, wash, repeat.
