I'd guess that avatars have been disabled temporarily to help ease the burden on the servers – MacRumors is likely getting a lot of traffic at the moment due to the Steve Jobs news.
 
What are the little arrows about next to the 'tar's?

They pulled the avatars down when the iPhone 4S was released, then they were put back up for a short while, before being taken back down because of Steve's passing away...
 
Just as long as no pictures are being circulated of us in our naked glory, I'll struggle on through this 'tar-less period.

The only real bummer is that I had changed my 'tar to be a tribute to Steve - oh well.
