You didn't waste any time, michaelrjohnson. You were ready with your avatar right after your 500th post. But I cut myself on the edge of it. You should have done a better job in warning us about the sharp edges (jaggies). I'm calling my lawyer! :D

500 posts? why so much? does it take a lot of work and space to give everybody that option?
No, but one (not the only) reason for avatars is to help identify those members who have been participating for a while, since they may "know the ropes". This of course isn't a reliable method for deciding who to trust for advice or whose opinion to give the most weight to in a discussion, but neither is any other method short of reading all of their previous posts.

The member "processor" rankings (under the member names) serve much the same purpose.

Given that you and everyone else can choose a member name, a signature, a photo for your member profile, and of course what to say in your posts, there are plenty of ways to show your personality/identity even before you get an avatar.

Here's my advice for how to get to 500. Start on a really big, really difficult project. Something that requires a lot of serious thought and and attention to detail. You'll find yourself posting 4 or 5 times a day on MacRumors while you procrastinate on your "serious" project. At least that's what happened to me. Now that I've finished my book, I don't post to MacRumors nearly as often. However, I'll be starting the next one in a couple weeks, so maybe you'll be seeing more of me here!

or you could start a month long soap opera fairy tale about your relations with women you steal from men they are about to move in with... it helps too if you work with her and that her best friend... who you also work with has been infatuated with you for the last two years... makes for fun comments and good times...

Bad G30ffr3y! Bad! Bad!

Now go to your room.

Anybody looking for a new avatar?

I think this would make an excellent one!

Or you could start a flame war about how the powerbook is a poorly designed computer and post a lot of messages in all-caps. But by then you might have a wanted sign underneath your 'tar. :(

Or you could post relatively non-useful replies in threads about how to get avatars. Ahhh, the only problem with circular logic is circular logic. :)

Thanks! I just resized it a bit and presto. Did you do that yourself or just find it somewhere?

It's the makeshift Command key from the P-P-P-Powerbook that a fellow named Jeff Harris used to scam an e-Bay scammer. See MacRumors thread, the original thread at somethingawful.com, or the summary at one of the mirrors shown in the first post at somethingawful.com, such as http://easynetworknyc.com/powerbook/.

The P-P-P-Powerbook is p-p-p-pretty well known now, and I just pointed out that the key would make a good avatar. So you are welcome to it, and you don't have to give me credit in your signature.

Once you get 500 posts and become a MacRumors 6502, you can get an avatar. This information can be found in the FAQ - check the links bar at the top of forums pages. It's next to your User CP.

i have 500+ posts but i still can't get an avatar... annoying!

edit:
log in, log out. working.

This is sorta similar to avatars -

I know I can change my picture, but can I change my screenname?? I looked around and it wasn't immediately obvious.

After a rush of people changing their names (by asking management to do it), arn stopped doing it.

So true! My post count jumps dramatically during final exam week.
