    Intro:
I recently purchased a Canon Ivis HF21, and I have been trying different things to get the best quality footage when importing. I am looking to make HD movies with the camera, and wanted to import the footage as cleanly and smoothly as possible.

    Some important details:
The camera shoots in AVCHD. (1080i)
I would like to have all my final footage in 720p.
I would like to use Final Cut, not iMovie.

    So two questions.

    1. I tried Final Cut first.. and I couldn't figure out how to import the video directly from the camera. How do I accomplish this?

    2. Using iMovie, when importing, I get two options: Large and Full. Are these the only possible options? If so, then how do I turn the footage into 720p once it is imported as Full?

Basically, I just want to know what the best way is for me to get 720p footage from AVCHD footage using Final Cut Pro.
    Thanks so much.

If you want to output progressive, shoot progressive.

To get it in to FCP, use Log and Transfer. Here's a vid to explain it.
Set up your sequence as ProRes format, either ProRes 422, or 422 HQ. And have a big hard drive :)

    HTH.
