My 2007 2.2GHz Santa Rosa is still running beautifully. An SSD has worked wonders, despite only running at Sata 1 speeds.
I will likely upgrade this year, as recent versions of Lightroom are pretty sluggish on this model, and that's software I spend much of my time in as a Lightroom plugin developer. I can't think of any other software I use that is sluggish on this machine.
While no slouch, another reason to upgrade from the 2007 is to take advantage of the improvements of the last 6 years - retina display, multi-touch trackpad, faster flash memory and CPU

Mine is only 3 years old (in a month) but it runs awesome.

I did put an SSD in late last year which has really improved performance. The ONLY thing that may get me to upgrade before the 5/6 year mark would be to get a computer that contains 16gb of ram.

If this 2010 could handle it i'd have already upgraded and probably would use it until the 5/6 year old mark.

I bought macbook retina with 16 gb of ram and 512 SSD. Age of my mac already 9 month and its still working good :D
My previous macbook 2010 - I give it to my friend as a gift.

mine is an early 2011 and after ssd and ram upgrade is still on the edge!
I hope it will last 2 years more, even if I think it will be very difficult to me not buying a new one next xmas

I have an early 2006 1.83 CD that is barely used. It has seen a lot of work, but will be put put to pasture soon.

The misses got the hand-me-down of a late 2008 2.53 C2D that was dropped in a parking lot onto the back left corner, the one with all the plugs. I had to take two pairs of needle nose pliers to mold the bend frame enough to be able to open the lid. I also had to twist some ports to allow it to accept ethernet and display cables. BTW - This is also the machine that took a bath from my son, who spilled a good 16 ounces of water into it. Took about a month before it dried out enough to turn back on again. A MONTH!!!

It's been about a year and a half since that bath, and it's still going strong.

Don't know if this helps ...

SSD upgrade

Put an SSD in any older mbp and it will seem like new again.

Yes, I have a 2009 Macbook Pro that I just put an SSD in and it runs like new. My daughter is starting grad school this Fall and asked if she can have it to replace her two year old Dell laptop. Gives me an excuse to get a new Macbook Pro (or Air), I haven't decided.

Mine is almost exactly 6 years old, and it's still going strong. A little slow, but it runs Photoshop CS5 and Chrome, so I'm happy.

2.4GHz 15" 4GB memory 160GB HD

I'm typing this on my late 2008 Alu Unibody Macbook. Still works fine on Mountain Lion. It spent 6 years in India, accompanied me on all my business trips (about 4 plane rides/month), was on basically 24/7 and kept in my office where temps with the AC off regularly reached 38 centigrade. I'm on my 3 rd battery now, 2nd HDD and I upgraded to 8 Gb RAM (which works fine). Tried an SSD but that's a recipe for disaster, it worked fine initially but regularly crashed in horrific ways, requiring a total restore.

Hope I'm not tempting fate, I intended to purchase a new one 3 years back but as it just keeps going and I have no need for a faster machine.

After my 2011 MBP failed due to multiple dgpu & HDD issues(3 years of usage), I decided to stay away from dgpu. So far, my late 2013 MPB with upgraded ram and 512 hdd, is serving me well. It is my main machine for work and home, never shut down and I lug it back and forth from office and home.

MBP is a machine with delicate components after all. If one treats it with care and common sense (if your machine is generating too much heat, get a stand for better air flow, etc.), it will last you awhile. Of course, I'm keeping my fingers crossed on the hardware defects.

I have a MBP (i5 model, non retina) from 2010 which received a new SSD (Samsung 840) and new RAM (total of 8GB) in 2013. It runs El Capitan like a charm. Boots up in seconds. The only thing that is nagging me is the bad screen...As I don't have an iPad yet I was planning on buying the Air 3 and keep the MBP until it stops working.

I expect to have my roughly 1 year old 13" mbp for a long while. If I have to replace it in the next 4 years I will be rather upset.
Same, although I may upgrade when Apple updates the design of the MacBook Pro if I really like it. Otherwise, I plan on keeping my late 2013 MacBook Pro for several more years.

My mid-2010 MBPro 13" runs better now than it did new with an SSD inside.
Still looks great, runs well.

My only concern with the new MBP is that nothing seems to be user replaceable, except maybe the battery. Still, with the slowdown in requiring faster and faster computers, it should still last a decently long time as long as you buy a higher than base model.

Still have my gen 1 MacBook Pro with core duo. It's the kids school laptop for projects and papers. Still working great!

I disagree with some here. I have a 2007 that's pretty slow and annoying to use. It's just collecting dust now.

5-6 years (with enough RAM and an SSD), 3.5 years if you have a dGPU :)

Is that your main machine? 10 years?
Its my main laptop, yes, but not main machine. I do most on a 2011 iMac (Home) or 2013 iMac (Work). Given the battery issue, as it doesn't have one right now, I haven't used it much the last year. I do expect a new Macbook to be used daily though.

But up until 2013 it was my main machine, and then the new work 2013 iMac took over.

That's incredible. Which MacBook are you upgrading to?
