i have downloaded a few little .avi video clips from the internet and everytime I try and open them in QuickTime 7.0.4, it tells me that some software needed to play it is missing. where can I find this "missing" software?

Just download VLC. It's just another video client that can pretty much play any formatt.

Note: My 1,000th post!!!

I'll second that. Been using VLC to watch .avi files for a while now with no problems.

Silly question, but is it possible to add the codecs that VLC evidentially has that allows it to play AVI files and add them to QuickTime? I would much prefer to use QuickTime since I tend to find the VLC interface a bit quirky.
