Since upgrading to 10.15.3 have had a few issues, one of these is with .AVI files.

Movies taken on camera in this format are viewable in 'Photos' but those taken on brinno time lapse camera are not.

I see there are options to open these files using software outside of Mac operating software (that come with Mac), but why do those from camera open and not those from timeshilft camera?

.AVI isn't really a native Mac format. QuickTime offered limited support for it in the past but compatibility was always hit or miss. Support seems to be dropping with each OS update.

Since the output of one camera works while another doesn't I would first look at how those cameras are different. I suspect there's a difference in frame rate that QuickTime doesn't like. Your AVIs will open in VLC or you could use Hand Brake to convert those AVIs into a format that plays well with QuickTime.

Thank you for your replies.

OK so downloaded VLC, then clicked file containing time lapse files, 'open with VLC' ...

the photos do appear but run so fast I am unable to view.

Next question is how do I slow the playback rate, they are hours long time lapse images?

Success! The third file containing images playback speed was as I expected.

Thanks again for your help.
