avi into itunes?

so i have a bunch of .avi files i would like to put on my ipad....do i have to handbrake these files to get them into itunes format? or is there any easier way? thanks.

avi is obsolete and not supported

i wonder when the same is true of .mp4/.m4v....as i am encoding all my video in those formats
