Try CineXPlayer. handles AVIs exceptionally well.(it runs fluidly on iPad 1 so it should be butter smooth on iPad 3)

what type of AVI's? AVI and Quicktime are container files...they can contain a large range of codecs so you have to be more specific.

    All video formats? that's insane.

AVPlayer HD handles everything I've ever thrown at it, even flv videos

I'll add to your choir. It's a top 5 must have app on the iPad. It even played 720p Mkv files on my iPad 2, however it stuttered a bit but should hopefully flow like butter on my iPad 3.

Unfortunately since the CPU is the same, videos will play the same on both the iPad2 and on the The new iPad in AVPlayerHD.

I would assume the video decoding is a job for the GPU.

Since we don't know what it's doing under the hood, the extra RAM and the new GPU might pump up the player's ability.

Only h264 video decoding, non-native formats like divx/xvid/wmv/etc are handled by the CPU.
