Avi player on Mac Sierra

Hi folks! Can anybody help me indicating a player to read AVI videos on my Macbook Air/Sierra? Thx in advance!

Dear Dave Braine, I used to have VLC and it was going fine, when it stopped running. I thought it was discontinued. After your tip I installed again with success, but it would not run any of my 15 AVI videos made by my action camera. I can watch them only on the small LCD screen on the camera. Any other tips?... Thx a lot.

I read avi comes in more than one type.

is there a way to find out which type?
does the action cam manual help with this?
