AVI wont work on snow leopard.
It used to but something has changed.
Please keep answers interpretable.

Download VLC.
Make a new User in Users & Groups, logout and into new User, same problem there or not?
If not you have problems from within your normal User Account, can be fixed.
No idea what Users and Groups is, and can't find it in finder.
It's in System Preferences.
And VLC Player should only be downloaded from here.

Sorry about the belated reply, Have been OS for a while and have not logged on to this site.
Unfortunately I cant recall what the issue was, but I'm fairly sure it either resolved itself or my son fixed it, as in terms of IT, I'm a good welder.
