Avoiding iTunes copying music to own folder

Is there any way I can refer iTunes to an iTunes library/music folder/collection, without iTunes copying the entire content to its own folder and instead just running the referenced files?

I keep my music on an external HDD, so it's redundant to have it at two places.

Yes, in iTunes go to Preferences --> Advanced and uncheck the option next to Copying the music files to the iTunes music folder.
