AW 5, 16 months old: about a month ago my battery health was 81%, now the message is "service recommended". It charges to 100% and is around 25% at the end of the day, not much change since it was new. I haven't updated my iPhone to 14.5 so the watch is almost up to date.

so ... I'm guessing the battery is not going to last too long. What's the cost to replace it? Can it be done at an Apple store? Sadly, I didn't get AC.

I would contact Apple and see what they have to say, 16months is rather short… worst case, they’ll tell what your options for replacement are…
FWIW, my S4 that is about 32 months old is at 87%, I know not a direct comparison but still…

Out of warranty battery replacement is $79.

excellent. I appreciate the help! have a great weekend.
Don’t be surprised if they tell you it is fine. My wife’s series 5 was showing the exact same thing in battery health as your watch. She sent it in to Apple for battery replacement and Apple said it was fine. I am starting to find Apple’s battery health app to be bs. I continue to read story after story about Apple saying battery is fine even though the battery health app state’s differentl.

I never believe the app and never will. Apple needs to seriously improve the app.

good point. I guess I'm also a little perplexed since I'm still making it through a usual day with 25% battery life remaining. so far, it's only given me a low battery warning a couple of times.

I really wish Apple never added battery health. Just ignore it already. It's useless. You even said not much change from the normal usage was happening--the whole battery health thing is a scam. My Mom's iPhone 6S was at like 67% Battery Health yet still went all day on a charge.

When it starts going all day to no more than 4 hours, or it starts swelling and popping the screen out, then you got a problem. I don't even know what my own Watch's battery health even is but I woke up a few times with it reporting 0% remaining charge yet still going. I get well over a day out of it (24 full hours). Even more so since I disabled background app refresh and most location stuff.

I'm not really one for conspiracy theories but Battery Health sounds more like a subtle way to make more sales from Apple. They lie and tell you it's too low and to service it so you give them more $$$ for a new watch while yours works perfectly fine but are just expected to toss it into the trash.

A lot has happened since the dark days of Ni-Cd and NiMH. Lithium Ion batteries are designed for a really long life span. Mostly over 10 years. I got a PowerBook who's year 2000 battery still works, as well as an old iPhone 4 that still holds well over a day's charge after 11 years. That's impressive. Wish the same held true though for my Galaxy S5--lucky to make 4 hours a day without being in Airplane Mode.

Agreed. The app isn’t very accurate. Especially for older Apple Watches. We have a Series 3 in the family that is 4 years old and it showed 95% battery life. A couple weeks later the battery started bulging. And pushed the screen out.
