Series 8 with GPS and Cellular is $529
Series 7 with GPS and Cellular is available for just $400 on Amazon.

Asking members of this forum to correct me if I'm wrong - but unless you care about crash detection and ovulation sensing, the discounted Series 7 is the watch to get until it sells out.

Are there any other differences I'm missing?

It was reported elsewhere that the series 8 watches will utilize in-watch GPS during activities even if you have your phone with you. This tends to result in increased accuracy, since a phone might be in a pocket or other location with lesser GPS reception. Reportedly that is a watch based thing and not watchOS. May not be important to you, but it can be important to some people.

Also depending upon your level of patience, you could consider waiting three or four months until series 8 refurbished start showing up. I’m guessing as to the time frame, I don’t remember when series 7 refurbs appeared.

Series 7 didn't show up in the refurbished store until May. The Series 5 and 6 in April. So wouldn't expect it anytime soon. The Black Friday deals in 2021 for Series 7 also only amounted to about $20 off.

Granted things might be different this year if the Series 8 doesn't sell as well (due to limited upgrades and more people purchasing the Ultra instead)

Generally the cellular version of the watch is a better value purchased through a carrier. Most offer 0% financing and better trade-in values. Verizon for instance is giving $180 in trade-in, along with $250 off if you purchase two.

Not so sure about that. I can’t recall Apple ever doing a mid-cycle color update on the watch itself (ie bands yes…but not the watch). The S7 Green was announced along with all of the other colors (Red, Blue, etc…) during the S7 launch (Fall 2021). You might be thinking about the green iPhone color they announced mid-cycle for the 13?
they added rose gold mid cycle....

I’ve got an S5 and considering the S7 to be honest. I don’t see any advantage of paying £130 more for the S8 when the additional features I won’t use anyway, and they look identical. You’ll notice a huge difference going from an S3 to an S7!
I think I might do the same. Does the 8 have any extra faces over the 7 - (not that I ever changed these much anyway)

A big one! Choice of band when you order directly from Apple.

Many people want something other than the standard band, especially those with a skin sensitivity or a preference for, say, the Apple sport loop, wanting its feel and easy adjustability. That's another $50, making the comparison more like $450 vs. $529.

For only $80 more, might as well get the latest. Or, stick with the Series 7 and use the difference for Apple Care+.

There's one other factor. Many would rather have their money go directly to Apple than to Amazon!

Thats a good point. If save $130 on the watch, but it comes with a band that I won't use, decrease the actual savings calculation by $50.

so I get that it's not worth upgrading to the 8, but what about somebody who's buying their first Apple Watch? would you learn towards the 7 or 8? (I've always had gamins, and will continue to use it for workout metrics)

Yes I'm female, but not interested in the ovulation feature, but surely there will be more benefits to that

I like the increased sensitivity in the GPS in the 8, but crash detection isn't really isn't a feature that I'm after

FYI The increased GPS sensitivity is only in the Ultra not the Series 8. If you don't care about ovulation or car crash detection the only benefit to the Series 8 is slightly more accurate sleep tracking via the temperature sensor.

Since it's your first Apple Watch the only real benefit to getting an S8 is being able to choose which band you want. If you're fine with the standard sport band then I would find a discounted Series 7.

I was going by the numbers in the OP. AW8 396x484 (191,664); Ultra 410x502 (205,802). The AW6 is 368x448. Be that as it may, I'm really liking the jump from the AW6.

If you scroll all the way down on the Apple Watch Compare Page to Display under Tech Specs it gives you more info.

The Ultra has about 6.9% more pixels but only a 1.8% larger display. This is because it needs more pixels to keep a similar display density (PPI) to the 45mm. Apple is a little bit misleading in the comparison by just quoting pixels.

Ultra is only 1.804% larger than the AW8 45mm.

1164 sq mm vs 1143 sq mm display area.

It's 16.065% larger than your AW6.

Fair enough. Thanks

I wouldn't assume the pixels are the same size.

Picked up an S8 Hermes because I have a S7 Ti and wanted something fancy in space black and used/refurb Hermes SB's are far and few between at a decent price.

I think if you don't want the ultra, a used S7 Watch edition is a better buy than the S8 unless you're looking to track your sexual activity.

(audible alarm apple watch ultra)

HONEY GET IN HERE NOW

The Ultra is a sports watch so it really depends whether those features really appeal. They don’t to me and I’m a keen runner. It’s a bit of a mediocre year for the Apple Watch to be honest.
I disagree about this being a mediocre year. Yes, the difference between the S7 and S8 is minimal, but the advancements in the Ultra make up for that. The Ultra may not appeal to you, but I think it'll appeal to a wide range of people. Even though it's being marketed as an extreme sports watch, I think it's actually just the next evolution in the Apple watch line. It's priced in the same range as the steel Apple watches, which means people are going to compare steel S8 to Ultra, and unless they absolutely hate the look, they'll go for the Ultra.

That said, I think next year will see a real shakeup in the Apple watch line, with the main question being how much of the Ultra features like better battery life and brighter screen will be incorporated in S9. So yes, I'm inclined to skip the S8, and Ultra 2 will obviously be better than this year's. But even if I don't buy a new watch this year, it won't be because I think it's a mediocre year for Apple watch. I'm very excited about the Ultra -- it feels like a big step forward in the evolution of the watch.

The vast majority of Apple Watch consumers don’t spend 850 quid on the watch and the Ultra only appeals to larger individuals or those who like oversized watches and are happy with the price point. I don’t see it as a wide range of people as the steel watches were aimed at the niche segments too. It is a mediocre year for the Apple Watch as the core market has been given a very poor incremental upgrade. I have a Series 5 and should be upgrading this year. I have the cash but the S8 is essentially a Series 7 with a car crash and pregnancy feature, neither of which I am remotely interested in. I will stick with what I have for now.

The watch appeals to a lot of people regardless of body size which is apparent by hundreds of pages of pictures on wrists. I can’t remember this much talk about an Apple Watch ever.
