My iPad is now a phone! WTF

This has already been talked about, but I'm so excited by this I had to post. My iPad is almost a complete iPhone because of two apps: Whistle & Text+.

I can send and receive texts easily through text+. it actually works great for free. And now with whistle which is also free, I can make calls over wifi and 3G. Whistle is working hard to get us push notification that will indeed make the iPad full fledged phone complete with text and call in, call out.

Really? Can't wait for that. Voicemail is still an issue if they want to be a complete solution. There are ways to force your carrier to use your google voice voicemail, but they only seem to work on carrier phones.

This app looks really cool. I'm just annoyed that it's US only :(
The same goes for google voice. I signed up for an invite when they first announced it and got an invite within a week of it coming out. But still they have no love for the UK
/mini rant

Works perfect! Even with Google Voice! Cant wait for iPhone OS 4.0 to come out will make it even more perfec!

Wow! This app is freaking awesome!

Everyone (in the U.S.) with an iPad or iPod Touch should have this app.

BTW, it has push notifications now. I'll be playing a game or online and my GIANT iPhone rings. :D. NICE.

what mic and ear phones work best?

Any suggestions on mic and earphones? Can blue tooth piece work with it?

I decided to give this a try, and I agree that it works amazingly well. I made some test calls to Goog411, and it had no trouble understanding what I said (business and city/state). I got a phone number in Vermont (I'm in SoCal), but I'll only use it for outgoing, so that's OK. It only costs 1.7 cents per minute to get rid of the ads, which seems reasonable. Pretty neat.

Gave it a try. This is a great app! Reminds me how badly I want the next iPad to feature a camera...imagine Skyping the family from the comfort of, well, anywhere...

Thanks for the recommendation!

The whistle site has an FAQ, and it says that bluetooth headsets won't work. I started a new thread asking for recommendations on wired headsets (it seemed a separate topic) but haven't received a response yet.

Sadly, neither my iPad nor iPod T recognize the mic on my Bluetooth Moto S9 headphones. So I got some wired headphones about two months ago from Target for ~$15. They've been working pretty good.

I've been using this app for two days now. It's a ton of fun. I was given a number from Indiana and have been (prank) calling my friends. :D.
The description in the app store says that push notifications are unlimited only for a limited time, then will be capped unless you subscribe. I only need a few a day anyway.
BTW, there are only 2 ten second ads per day (1st two calls).

I love this app. I'll love it even more one the iPod 3G is in my possession.

Is there a way to disconnect the app or log out? I also installed the app on my MacBook and it rings on both when I have an incoming call.

Does the app consume battery when the iPad is idle?
