Got an Apple Watch Ultra 2 on launch day and have used it daily since, battery is doing alright, couple of general wear and tear but nothing major.

I’m not into ultra sports, standard fitness and at the time just wanted the larger screen.

Apple Watch Series 12 announced today - since I don’t need the ultra for the ultra features is a series 12 considered an upgrade or downgrade.

I’m like 80% convinced to make the change. I also secured a good Apple Trade In value before the event, so I have that locked for 14 days.

I’m thinking about trading my U3 in on a 12.

The U3 is nice, and the battery life lets me track sleep. But in the year I’ve worn it I’ve learned what I already expected… I sleep fine. But I’d like some of the new watch features, especially the conversational assistance (hearing impaired) so if I trade the U3 on a 12, it won’t cost me much at all.

It depends on the context.

From a durability perspective it's obviously a downgrade.
From a performance perspective it's obviously an upgrade.
From a battery life perspective it's obviously a downgrade....

You can see where this is going 😀

Best thing to do it go to Apple and do a direct comparison the features that matter to you between the two watches.

Whether anyone else considers it an upgrade or downgrade is irrelevant as they're not necessarily using the watch the same way that you do.

Don't buy products by committee, buy them based on how you use them.

I have an AWU2 and don't do ultra sports either, but a Series watch would be a big downgrade to me.

I still have an S8 I occasionally wear. The crystal has a scratch that happened almost immediately after I got it, the battery life gets me through one day but won't last through the night for sleep tracking, I miss the Action Button, and I miss the larger screen and Modular Ultra watch face. I keep it around as a spare, but I'd never go back to a Series model as my main watch.

There are tradeoffs involved either way, only you can decide which one is best for you. Anybody else's opinion is just that - an opinion.

I thought about going to the ceramic 12 from the Ultra 3 but chose the Ultra 4. Better battery, Action button for flashlight, I wear it at night, brighter screen, dual band GPS, better mic and speakers, love the Ti band. I've had all 3 and kinda want something diff but the Ultras has tech I use. very form follows function. Opposite for the ceramic 12 IMHO.

I just ordered a Ti 12, and will probably sell my U3. Love the battery life but it doesn't work well with dress shirts + cufflinks and I miss the thinner form factor.
