Was hoping someone with one of these might be able to help.

I'm currently running a 500mzh sonnet in my B/W, but I was wondering if the upgrade to 1ghz would be worth it? I understand it reduces the bus to 66mhz.

G3 or G4?

Both exist, and I have both(although my G4 is in a beige). The G3 keeps the FSB at 100mhz. One potential downside is that you can't run anything higher than 10.4.9. It's a very fast feeling, and also a cool running CPU.

The G4 is a beast. I actually prefer it in a beige partially because you're not taking the FSB "hit" as on a B&W. Basically, though, to me the 1mb L3 does make a noticeable difference, and it's really advantageous if you are doing stuff that leverages Altivec.

By the sounds of it, I'm best off sticking to my G4/500.

Unless I just happen upon a G3/1Ghz ;-)

Neither one is exactly easy to find, although I'd dare say the 800mhz and 1ghz G4s are probably a fair bit easier.

My 1ghz G3 popped up in a complete B&W in England. Around the same time, a Voodoo 5 5500 came up in a different B&W also in England. I bought both and had them shipped to a friend(and member of this forum) over there. He pulled the 1ghz, the Voodoo, and a few other useful-to-me expansion cards from the two computers, packaged those into something that was manageable to ship across the Atlantic without breaking into 1000 pieces, and kept the rest for himself. I then assembled them into one comprehensive beast of a B&W 🙂

If you want a really difficult one to find-the G3s actually went up to 1.1ghz.

The 500mhz Sonnet G4 is a good CPU. I have one in my G3 AIO.
