Great concept picture, but why SMALLER than the Nano?

yeah i dont have an answer for that. You would have to ask usedHONDA.

since it would be touch screen it would make sense to make it a little bigger huh

This is true. Now, in this device, do you imagine it using current apps, or requiring new ones? It would seem to me that due to the change of hardware, new apps would be required.
Apple has already hinted that they are changing the Nano screen to be the same Height/Width ratio as the Touch. Even if it's a lower resolution (480x320 vs 240x160 or 320x240) it could run the same apps just like any PC can do, except at a lower resolution.

I think Apple will be migrating away from the click wheels on their next version of their Ipods I can see that happenning maybe as soon as sept'

I'm beginning to think the recurring rumors of a smaller iPhone are in reality a smaller iPod Touch, i.e. an iPod Nano with touchscreen. Clearly if they DO make a smaller iPhone, it follows that a smaller iPod could be it's offspring like the Touch came from the 1st iPhone.

Again, just a thought exercise.

Rumor has it that Apple will be producing an iPhone nano...

(Won't actually look like that... lol)

Picture from http://9to5mac.com/iphone_nano ... "rumor" aswell.

It would be great...and yet, I would assume that there would be fewer available apps (if it even accepted apps)

If it was available to pay-as-you go customers...then would the 'rumored' $150 price tag be the 'all around' price tag?...how would they offer a rebate price, would it be cheaper with contract?

These are things that I'm sure will be ironed out eventually, but in the mean time...I think focusing on some of the downfalls of the iphone 3g, and making the customer consensus base happy before jumping off the deep end into no man's land would be in their best interest. I mean c'mon, do you really want another apple phone with crippled bluetooth, and the ever dreaded no copy paste.

I realize, the topics been beaten to a frothy pulp...but yet, it's still soooo true.

You wouldn't be the first to go that thought route :)

I don't see Apple going back to a old style nano shape. The more-square shape helps with a 4:3 screen. Or even a move to 16:9 (If the rumours are right, about laptops, it could filter down next year). A decent size gives it enough space for a bare essential style.
I'd vouch the nano will go touchscreen very soon anyhow, so why not to a Nano (Touch), and a Nano iPhone?
Would the Classic line come for the ride? Probably...

Touch wouldn't get GPS I wouldn't imagine - it already has Skyhook.
No need for a click wheel. The click wheel, whilst a strong symbol for the iPod, is being moved to the less obvious touch screen.

I'd imagine the nano iPhone is at least a year out though. I'd imagine the rate of model change wioll be in some ways similar to the rate for the iPod, if you browse any of the "evolution of iPod" pictures/videos. They wouldn't drop the resolution.

The honda illustration is nearly on it - Apple seems to have 2 competing visual themes - the MacBook Air style - aluminium tapering, which is rumored to be coming to the MacBook &/or MacBook Pro, and the chunkier iMac, iPhone, iPod Touch style. The white iPhone is a kind of a bridge between them, purely through the colouring.

The iPhone frame is already stuffed with electronics so there's precious little chance of a smaller version at the moment.

A Touch Nano? Possible, but with the interface of the Nano/Classic on steroids than a full-blown Touch interface - simple reason being lack of finger space, especially with the capacitive touch display - i.e. no plunking down with nails. And since it won't have Wifi that lack of a more sophisticated interface won't be a problem - no Safari, no email, etc.

That makes a good bit of sense. There's just not enough screen room for keyboard, Safari or anything similar.

The only problem really is a balance of flash vs function. A touch display in a nano-sized screen may actually be significantly less efficient in music navigation than the click wheel. Form over function? I think they might well go for it. The click wheel was a notable departure for Apple - it combined form and function in a very pure sense, whereas in most other Apple products these days function takes a back seat to form.

4D - who knew your dream would cause this much fuss? :D
LOL... I did. ;)

It's what I do in my design classes... I throw an idea out there to stimulate the discussion. Almost always it results in ideas far better than the initial one.

As I think I stated before, wifi could exist without a web browser. It's easy to implement (you can find it in the eye-fi SD card ), and would enable all the apps that get info off the web. AOL radio, Youtube, etc. Leave Safari off it, as that's the Touch's realm. To get all the necessary hardware in it all you would need to do is make it as thick as the Touch, which is only 8mm.

That would be good functionality.. Intriguing, no doubt.

True, but i still like it, it kinda gave ipod its identity along with being pure white etc
White, like white keyboards, just looks dirty after awhile.

I've got an assortment of players, and the screen sizes range from Touch 3.5" screen to a 2.4" screen on my Pilot. A 2.4" diagonal screen is the same size tall as the Touch's screen is wide. If a Touchscreen Nano's screen was that size and had the same sensitivity and sensor algorithm as the Touch I have no doubt it would be easily as usuable. I don't have tiny fingers and I'm 99% on tiny web links in safari on the Touch. Leave the browser out to avoid those tiny links. With any other need for a keyboard you can force the keyboard to a horizontal orientation where it would be as big as it's vertical size on the Touch.

But how much room would be left on the screen, if you make the keyboard the same size as the Touch's? I'm not sure how big that is.

Without changing the keyboard, there would still be room to see the entry line above the keyboard. Move the rows a little closer together and you would have two lines for input or options above. My Instinct phone does this. Works well enough.

That's pretty neat! What do you think of the Instinct, btw?

The Instinct has a crappy browser, but otherwise is a great phone. Does audible GPS navigation (handy in a pinch when in a new city), stereo bluetooth, support expandible memory on microSD cards (8gb for $39 in mine), TV, Visual Voicemail, Radio, Live search, Voice command, etc. If they would put a better browser on it I'd sell my iPod Touch.
You can also download apps, but the assortment is not very big.

True. Someone has to start the rumors. Someone has to feed them too. Most are simply one person's assembly of clues drawn out to a potential conclusion. Only Apple knows what it will really do, and we have no idea if they've seen the same clues as we have. It will get very interesting if they push. If they fall back to minor changes then someone else will be fulfilling the rumors. I can't imagine Dell re-entering the game without something orginal up it's sleeve. Samsung wants to triple it's US sales, and has the design and manufacturing capability in place. Microsoft usually starts catching up by it's third try. It will be a very interesting season!

On a related note, CrankyGeeks.tv's episode this week has Molly Wood as a guest. If you're interested, see what she says is behind the rumor of a nano iPhone.
