funny I just called Apple again and told a different guy the story...he asked his supervisor and he said there are NO pilot programs going on right now and that Apple is not replacing the 3g/3gs glass for $99. he said it is $199 and that the i4 backs were not being replaced for $29........ he made the statement that it sounds like someone is fixing them under the table!

I find it hard to believe that two different stores are doing this in different parts of the country but he said this is definately not an apple program. I dont have a store that I can go to and ask.....

front glass broken

my front glass broke on my 4. i am at apple store in plano right now. quoted me $30 for back glass and $199 for front. i was ready to fork over $199 and apple just handed me my new phone and paper work. cost $0.00.

i have the incase clear cover on it and told the guys what happened. i was shocked and thankful, almost gave the guy a hug!

Apple has a customer for life now, time to start picking out that macbook pro.

I can confirm that Apple Stores will replace the back glass of an iPhone 4 for $29. They cannot replace the display as of yet, so if you crack your screen, you're looking at a $199 out of warranty replacement for the entire unit. If you have an iPhone 3G/3GS with a cracked display, it's now $99 to replace the display or $199 for a whole unit replacement (liquid damage or out of warranty). This change occurred August 24th. AppleCare won't know about it because it's only available at Apple retail stores. AppleCare won't send you out a back glass replacement and expect you to replace it yourself because that would void your warranty.

RKRocha - just wanted to thank you for posting this. I just had the same luck.

I dropped my iPhone over this past weekend and had a crack that went from upper left hand corner to lower right. Had a case on the iPhone and it didn't matter because it hit the ground on the corner.

Anyway, I went to an Apple Store (after reading RK's post) to inquire as to how much it would cost to replace and the process. I explained what happened and that I realized it was my fault and not covered under the standard warranty. Low and behold, the Genius rep said that he would do a one time replacement and swap the phone out for a new one for no charge.

Needless to say I was shocked and very happy. I had no problems with Apple before, but they definitely cemented me as a customer for life.

My suggestion - if you crack the front glass at least take a shot at going to an Apple Store to see what they say.

So do you guys think that they have a heat gun at the retail stores ready to replace back glasses? Lol

I wonder if they would replace the entire back plate just to save them the trouble
But then again $30 for parts and labor is awfully cheap especially from apple

glad i could help

mikemj23 - 1st a shout out the G.O.A.T MJ23, 2nd - glad I could help with your cause, although now I have to share in my "most special apple customer" award. :D

mytran80 -no hot glue gun used, haha. although that would have saved me the restore time when i got home though.... thank goodness i did that before i went to the store!

Another confirmation that back glass in the Apple Store in Durham, NC is being replaced for $29.95. I went in last week and it was still so new of an offering that the manager who checked me in for my appt. knew but the "Genius" did not until I told her.

ONE WARNING!!
When they replaced my glass the "Genius" at the bar forgot to remove the protective plastic on the INSIDE of the glass, so the pictures I took over the weekend look like they have a massive grease slick over them. Kind of like the old fuzzy vaseline coated lenses of the 70's.

I took it in on Monday and the guy fixed it for me.

If you get yours fixed, take a picture with it before leaving the store and make sure the photo is crisp and clear as normal. Believe me, you'll know it if it's not. It's pretty different.

Replacing back on iphone 4 is job that monkey could bo.. Blind folded ;) front screen is another story.. Its like totally reverse from 3G(s) so no wonder it dont cost more :)

My brand new iPhone 4 has a hairline crack on the back plate in the lower corner. Never been dropped, always been babied, and I'm a bit peeved. I'll stop by the Apple Store in Zürich next week and report back on replacement cost.

It will still be good information since he is in Zurich Switzerland.

Most all posts have been about the $29 replacements in the US.
