I am trying to use back to my Mac for the first time. I keep my iTunes library on an external hard drive attached to my Mac Mini. Can I access this drive thru btmm or does it have to be connoted to my AirPort Extreme?

In the general sense, you just to allow screen & file sharing in system preferences/sharing. Add your user name to the list of allowable users.

In system preferences/power you need to enable "wake on network".

On your airport extreme, put your apple-id in the "back to my mac" section of the front page.

That should do it….BTW, by signing in as yourself you should have access to all connected drives.
