Back to School Promotions

I am kind of in the same boat. I have decided to get the new model but I have decided to wait for the promotion for now - although I might change my mind 
As pointed out in another thread (https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/back-to-school-promo-2017.2048536/) Apple were giving away $100 gift cards in New Zealand as their Back to School promotion earlier this year. So it might be the same in the northern hemisphere this summer.
As for the timeline I think we will see the promotion starting sometime in July. But that is only a guess.
