Using my iMac, I want to be able to back up my Share Folders (Files) on my Nas My Cloud drive to an External drive.

I just want the Files and Folders, and not any system files so I do not want to use Time Machine.

Someone suggested Automator with Calendar Alarms.

How do I do this.

Dragging and dropping too much trouble, automating the process, perfect.

here is a rough introduction on how to do it using automator - you can easily attach that as a folder action.

Otherwise your NAS might come with an included sync which you usually can configure from the NAS-webinterface, resulting in even more comfort.

I was able to create an Automator app that backed up NAS shares to an external USB drive. However, I had to open the NAS Share and place it on the desktop to give the automator app the Share location. How do I get automator to copy Folders directly from the NAS network drive without having to open the NAS drive and open the Share to the desktop.

The automator can not find the file path unless I do this.

I would use Carbon Copy Cloner (not free except for a trial period). I'm pretty sure it can mount network-accessible folders automatically each backup run, without you having to do it. At least I know it can do it for a remote Mac. Run it on a schedule you define. CCC may be more than you really need, but it's a top-quality piece of software with reliable support for many years now.

I have a CCC task which runs daily copying from a NAS to a Mac drive. The mounting of network drives can be tricky, so there is an occasional failure when CCC is unable to mount the shared drive.

When I launch the NAS and place the share on the desktop, select the file in Automator, I am able to move files to the NAS.

However, if the Share is not on the desktop and I run the automator it does not find the file.

In automator I used select server, mount, to mount the share on the desktop, and that caused all kinds of problems.

As part of my Folder Action I want the Folder Action to Open the NAS and place the share on the desktop.

How does one do this. The Files and Folders server scripts do not work well with finding files.

So how do I build a Folder Action that opens the NAS and put the Share on the Desktop with file I want to move files and folders to?

Dunno about automator. Why do you want to do this manually when there is an excellent app (CCC) which I think does what you want?
