I'm upgrading my imac to a ssd. My current HDD has 180gb used.I was planning on installing a 60gb ssd and using the ssd just for the os and apps. My question is how can i just backup the OS and all my current settings without backing up the whole 180gb.

CarbonCopyCloner lets you select what to backup/clone, thus you could leave out your user or the big files. You need an external enclosure for the destination drive.

i want to be able to restore just the os with all settings in tact, like desktop widgets...etc. what folders would i need to select to do a restore?

Get a drive dock to connect the old drive to your machine once you've installed a clean copy of OS X on the SSD. Launch the Migration Assistant and choose the option to move only the user settings, not all the apps, etc.
