What's the consensus on Background App Refresh this many years later? Back then when it launched, everybody suggested turning it off. Battery life gains, smoother experience, etc was a result of this. As the years pass by, I guess it has been 'smarter' in terms of not using too much juice and RAM.. but is it still advisable to turn it completely off?

Is is more beneficial to turn BAR off on iPhones to keep it running better? Or is that detrimental to performance, battery and the AI learning your patterns? Would it be better to leave everything as is and let the phone do it's thing?

I didn't even know about BAR or I did, I forgot about it. Anyway, in my iPhone 13, turns out about half the apps have it on, and half off. I also have Low Data Mode on, for what that's worth. Anyway, for my use case, I have no battery issues, and Battery Health Maximum Capacity is 100% using Optimized Battery Charging.

I keep it on since first released and have not notice any battery drop that has prompted me to disable it. Mind you I have gone thru several phones with all battery wear taken into account.

Thanks for the replies you guys. I guess I'll just enable it and leave all apps on and let the AI handle it.

I've always thought turning it all off would make you phone smoother and last longer since it's not using resources to hold data in the background or update data in the background!

I really cannot makeup my mind around it to be honest , it seems to depend on what apps you have enabled to do this.

If you are a WhatsApp user you will always see WhatsApp as a top battery user in the background with this On or Off.

Theses days I keep it on so that:
WhatsApp, Wipr, TrueCaller, Gmail, Outlook and Teams can update themselves in the background.
