my background desktop image varies depending on whether i'm using the external monitor (clamshell, 1900x1200ish res) or the internal monitor on the macbook. Is there a way I can get it to just stay with one image?

do you have it change to a random image during a set period of time or did you set a specific background yourself?

Nothing is broken - this is one fantastic feature of Mac OS X.

You can setup different backgrounds for each single monitor, you connect to your mac. (I have different backgrounds on my bmp screen, my second monitor at home and my second monitor at work.)

To change the monitors background, right click anywhere on the desktop and choose "change desktop background...".

Now on each active monitor should pop up a screen where you set its background seperately.
