To the OP:

Tell me, how much of the background wallpaper do you see in the iPad? A lot of it because the icons are small and are spread apart. Hence, it makes sense to have a wallpaper.

On the iPhone, a filled screen or even 3/4 filled with apps takes up 70% of the screen. You would only see 30% of the wallpaper through cracks in between Apps and border of the iPhone OS. It would be asinine - probably why Apple hasn't offered the option yet.

Understood. I know people that jailbroke their iPhone so that they could apply a custom background. I for one never have. Photos aren't the only thing you could use as a background. I'm thinking maybe textures that would blend in with the icons, better than a photo. If they added drop shadows to the icons, that would provide a little more contrast and effect. Just some ideas. I don't care too much about backgrounds. Just bringing it up for discussion.

I have a jailbroken iPhone with a wallpaper image. I enjoy the lovely picture of fall foliage in my native Vermont on a cold Winter's day. The fact that you would not choose to use a wallpaper does not make the choice to use one (or the desire for a feature to allow it) "asinine."

I could really care less about a customizable background. The thing I want most integrated into 4.0 is Categories. I like simplicity, as can be seen from my current homewcreen. Having 5+ screens doesn't give me that.

Oh I know they won't, but Id like to see at least a folder/categories option. If Iphone OS4 has that I probably wouldn't even think about jailbreaking.

Well, the iPad runs iPhone OS 3.2, not iPad OS, so I guess we'll see it included.

I don't think it is definite it will be in 4.0. Just because the iPad runs the iPhone OS doesn't mean anything. It will always have features not available on iPhones (like the new popup menus). When Apple merges the code base back together in 4.0, there will still be differences between the two. Hopefully background support makes it to the iPhones though.

I disagree. The screenshot below looks pretty good.

Yep, the iPad's large screen really needed a background to not look any more plain. That doesn't necessarily carry over to the iPhone.

Another question is, will Apple only allow certain predetermined backgronds that they think is best? And/or will they sell more if so?

I massively altered my display... but as others have said, it soon got boring and I ended up restoring my phone to go back to the simplicity of before.

This is what it used to look like (home screen and games page):

I did sort out the calendar app... just never took a shot of it

bosspaper

So is it possible to use synced pictures with bosspaper? If so how?

Well bosspaper doesn't allow you to use your synced photo albums but you can add pics individually from your camera roll. I have about 60 wallpapers that i have auto changing every 30 seconds on my phone and bosspaper only runs this while your on the springboard so while in apps or screen is off its not running and draining battery at all. I set it to be random and have a fade out effect, i had it remove the names of apps on spring board except the ones on the dock. I gives some more room for the backgrounds and i know what my apps are i don't need to see the names.
