Sorry if this has already been answered....

I just noticed i have 58 background tasks running according to istat... Any way to end them to free up ram?

No, as they are system processes which need to run in order to use the OS.

Look at Activity Monitor, select to SHOW ALL PROCESSES and sort by REAL MEM and see for yourself, that those process take only a tiny amount of RAM (less than 100MB combined).
