backing itunes library for reformat

i have my iphone synced with my itunes library. how do i back it up in preperation for a reformat so i can still manage music on my iphone? i made the mistake of formatting my mac and downloading my music thru icloud only to be told i wouldnt be able to manage my iPhone music as it was synced with another library
