If your phone is jailbroken and you backup to your desktop, in the event you need to restore your phone, what essentially happens with that backup?

Does it restore the full iOS current version as 'stock' along with all your settings etc?

    Or.

Does it restore the full iOS backup including the jailbroken aspect of the device at the time you had backed up your phone?

    Just wondering.

    Thanks!

It is best not to restore a backup taken from a jailbroken device. Leftover files and directories will be restored which can cause issues. In addition Apple can possibly deny warranty if they detect this.

Okay. Thanks for your help. What happens if Apple puts out an update to the OS? Does it then simply overwrite the Jailbreak? What about all those 'other directories'? Are they erased as well?

Apple puts out updates all the time.
You dont have to update or restore to the latest ios version.
    You can just stay jb.

Right, but if you do run the update, what happens to your jail broken phone? Is it reverted to stick with all the hidden directories removed? Or are they still present which may cause problems for you?

If you try to update ota it might get stuck and need an itunes restore.
If you update with iTunes it will go to stock but its preferred to do a restore if you want to go to stock instead of update to have a solid ios install.
