We have a 2008 MacBook and an iMac from I think 07 and they're both getting a bit tired. We're thinking about adding a new computer this year.

Not being in school any longer, I'm not sure if we'll need a laptop anymore. If we get an iMac, this is a moot question. If we go for a MacBook, I'm interested in not paying large amounts for internal storage and using an external given MOST work will be done at home.

That said, in years of working with macs, I realized I don't know how to do something: if you keep files on an external drive, how do you backup that drive?

    Is this a stupid question?

Well that was easy. Didn't know it did attached drives.

It excludes them by default but you can change that in System Preferences/Time Machine/Options.
