Backing up iTunes

I'm selling my computer. I need to clear all my music and video content off of it. I backed it up all to my iPod. Can I then just sync the iPod's contents back to the new computer iTunes?

But does it work the same with an external hard drive plugged in as a blank CD?

I plugged in my external hard drive, but it keeps saying insert blank disc when I follow the steps above.

No, an External Hard Drive is not the same as a CD or DVD.
