I have an iMac and a uMBP and I'm kind of getting nervous about HDD failure so can you buy one external hard dive and use it for 2 computers. or is it like 1 external hard drive for each computer?

You can use 1 external for 2 computers. Connect the external to one computer, and then through your network (or in the Finder sidepanel) you can mount the external onto the other computer. Then aim Time Machine at the external drive on each computer and voila!
