Backing up my Contacts on iPhone

I'm going to dip my toes in the hacking water going from 1.1.4 to 2.0.3 software.

Is there a safe way that I can back up my contacts on the iPhone? I know my music and video files will sync via iTunes, but I'm not sure about the Contacts. (And maybe text messages?)
